Can Someone Please Remove This Curse? Gruesome Images attached

So last weekend was P2A. I was super excited because for the first time in 8 years I was finally in the elite wave. We had great weather and it had been pretty dry leading up to it. I rode super cautiously in the off road bits to stay safe. At about 40km (I have no recollection of what happened), but from talking to a few people it seems as though I might have rubbed wheels. How does that happen in a single file pace line? My best guess is that I was overlapping wheels a bit to shield from a northernly wind (riding straight east at this point), and maybe the guy shifted quickly over into me. I honestly have no idea, and if you know please comment and tell me. Clear, straight road, absolutely no reason for it at all. Catskills crash was the same way (that time a fluke front tire blow out) less than a year ago. I need some better luck!

Anyway apparently I didn't know my name or the year so I got sent via ambulance to Brantford General. Got imaged up and sent to Hamilton where they have a plastic surgery team to help stitch up my face.  Anyway I know from the success of the old show "Scars" (on MTV I believe?) that people like to see this stuff. So attached is a few pics. Only head, helmet and sunglasses got beat up. Rest of body and bike is fine. Cost of this crash: Lazer Z1 helmet, prescription Oakley Jawbones, over 20 stitches, 3 facial fractures, 2 front teeth, and a mild Concussion. (When I wrote that I sang it in the tune of 12 days of Christmas...) Luckily I didn't need any surgery for facial fractures. The dental process I have to wait and see what will happen there...

Anyway what does this mean? Well I am not getting paid to race, so I am stopping road racing for a few weeks (doctor suggested 6) to let my facial bones heal up. Depending on the concussion I will hopefully be back training soon. I might still try for the TT OCUP/worlds qualifier just because I will be by myself. I will keep the healing process updated on here for those following!

Ambulance bound.

Looks like before stitches and clean up, at hospital.
A little thing my sister put together from my two days in the hospital.

Updated pic! Swelling is down and now most stitches are removed.

Good Friday Road Race - Picture story

I had good family support today and my brother manned the camera for the E1/2 race so instead of giving my boring story for you to read, I will tell most of it with pictures!
My brother in his first race as a junior!

Family and neighbour support for the day

Junior/E3 neutral start didn't look all that neutral

Alright, E1/2 race. Pack all together except Jeff Schiller...

A few riders ended up getting DQ'd for crossing yellow line.

Schiller crushing it off of the front.

A late chase group trying to bridge to another chase up the road.

Pack coming in shortly after.

2 chase groups mesh behind Schiller. Think they can catch him?

Back half of the chase. According to twitter, the guy in the green shouldn't have been racing...

Jeff Schiller solo win! Bruce Bird close behind.

Bird taking an impressive second place.

New elite 2 rider Larbi Benhabib taking 3rd.

Sprint from the chase group.

Last two riders of the chase, happy to see the end.

Sprint from the pack. Ed Veal showing off his track training and blows the field away.

And a few mins later I thought I would join the party after getting dropped 2nd last lap :(

Done and better luck next time! And maybe better effort.

Steaming Nostril 2015 - Great Barrier Winds!

The race this year took on a slightly different route, with mainly a change in the start and finish. The dreaded rail trail section was removed for an all-road opening. The last 15km had a cool spring classics feel to it going into farm lanes and a little bit of rail trail. It finished off with a climb of 69 steps and a little crisscrossing through a park. The race went all right as a fitness test, but I couldn’t help but be incredibly angry with myself with the result…

So like all mass start events, I always say but never do, show up to the start line early to be near the front. During the neutral start I didn’t fix my mistake and kept the same position in the pack. I was too far back and watched the group split ahead of me as I worked hard to move up the field as it was ripping apart. Would be much easier to do this when the pace is lower.  I kept the lead group in sight but I wasn’t able to bridge.

A group behind me started working together and they caught up to me. I joined in to take a break for a bit. This lasted a few km’s before there was a crash at around 25km into the race. I was able to brake hard then unclip and jump off my bike. Might have tweaked my ankle a bit but otherwise didn’t do much damage to myself. There was someone else was on the ground in pain, hopefully they aren’t too bad. I looked up the road to see that the group carried on without a second thought to the fallen soldiers.

I chased hard for the next 30mins, periodically picking someone up that had fallen off the group and then dropping them and continuing on. I finally made it back on just in time for some insane crosswinds. It was hard to get a draft and my legs were already feeling fatigued from the chasing and extra work I did (that could have been prevented with proper placing at race start!).  A few guys broke off the front of our group and I didn’t have the motivation to chase them.

Things were starting to get fun again towards the end with the mixed terrain. Then we got to a farm section with less that ideal path conditions. Being fatigued and not thinking properly, I saw that the other side of the path looked smoother and more packed down. I forgot that I was in a rut and when I went to cross over I went down hard, right into a puddle. Luckily I was hot from anger and racing, otherwise I would have been very cold in my now soaked jacket and pants. From here I lost all remaining motivation to push hard and just rode safely through the rest of the farm section and rail trail. I found a bit more drive when I hit the stairs just because there were spectators.

I finished off 32nd, and got 3rd in the 20-29 age group category. Not terrible with the two crashes I suppose and the extra chasing I had to do. Terrible though for what I had hoped to accomplish and from what I thought to be totally preventable circumstances. Oh well, live and learn! I get to retest my fitness this week at the Good Friday road race. If I find some pictures from the race I will be sure to post them! Thanks for reading J
Got a silver medal because they took the overall winners out of the age group results!

Training update

So big news! I finally got a ride in outside this year! Well it isn't really big news, but a great sign that warmer weather is on its way. I am sure everyone can't wait to have this long winter over with and have warmer weather and sunny days back. I am certain that I have been losing my mind with all the indoor rides. I find myself gazing off into space more frequently and becoming unaware of my surroundings. It was nice to ride on the gravel roads today with ice and mud, forcing me to stay mentally alert for once. Hopefully I will snap back into it as training continues to ramp up for the seasons beginning. I have been putting in some quality efforts on the spin bikes, but I still need to drop some weight as time continues. These damn roll up free donuts keep getting the better of me. It would be a lie if I said that was my only over indulgence though. I need a good friend to follow me around and swat at me every time I look at a sweet. Or maybe a cattle prod and give me a nice ZAP!

I have updated my race schedule with my races so far. I think I have enough money saved to race those races as long as other life expenses don't surprise me along the way. Provincials was moved to August which is a nice touch, spreading out the calendar a bit more. I am excited to see the crowd that Grey County RR brings being the world champs qualifier. With all that climbing I will definitely need to get that weight down!

I will keep you guys updated with the season, and hopefully postings with cool ride scenes once I start getting outside. Enjoy the warmer week ahead!

Human stress - let's take a quick look...

I know a few people going through some tough workloads right now so I thought I would change things up a bit with this post and maybe try and offer some insight/advice.

Everyone everyday deals with stress in his or her life. No matter how big or small the problem seems to an outsider it always somehow seems to be a big deal to you. I know I have been guilty of comparing my problems and others to say problems that others would face in war-stricken countries.  Sure it might help ease your mind and help put things into perspective, but does it mean that your problems don’t matter? First let’s look at what the body does…

The human nervous system is pretty bad at giving you information on an absolute scale. Take temperature for example. Say that you have three buckets of water, one cold, one hot, and one lukewarm. You put one hand in the cold and the other in the hot, and then you put both hands in the lukewarm bucket. The hot hand will say that the water is cold, and the cold hand will say that the water is warm. Your nervous system interprets its surrounding on a relative scale.  Now this same concept can be applied to the issues that we experience in our day-to-day life. Whether you are camping in a forest where you know there are bears in the area or if you have a test to write one day, I believe your primary stressor will affect you nearly the same regardless of how big it is. So what matters is that your problems really do matter, to you.

How can we manage this? First off I want to make the point that people get down and out thinking that they are the only one going through a tough time. I think we can all take some solace in the fact that everyone has their own problems and are stressed about them no matter what face they are putting on in front of you. So know that you aren’t in it alone. But remember these issues are relative to what is important to you, so this is where the comparison issue comes in. You can’t expect someone else to care about your issues if they believe they are or someone else is facing something worse. Having a good friend or family member that you can talk to is always a good place to go though if you want to talk it out with someone.

Ok, since it is relative and it is important to you and may only be important to you then maybe you should try and get rid of the stressful situation. Maybe it is just a test at school or possibly asking that person you have a crush on out on a date. Something like that can ‘easily’ be taken off your plate by completing the task. Other things like a past history or something else you can’t just remove from your environment will take more work.

For this you will need to give yourself on-going care, especially if you find yourself to be someone who stresses over everything. Exercise is a great option because it has tons of health benefits and has been shown to have similar effects to taking anti-depression drugs. This will help with the important part of keeping that mood up and your outlook positive. If you aren’t a big exerciser, then just find something else that you like to do, a hobby, that gets your mind somewhere else, somewhere it can relax. Also sort of mentioned above, going out and being social with friends is another great way to blow off some stress. Forgetting about your problems for a few hours can help reset that relative scale and make it think, “hey if I forgot about it, it can’t be that bad”.  Also getting a good laugh in can help lots with this I find. For me, a good Will Ferrell movie or skit can completely flip my mood around.

I know personally, I have used cycling to get rid of my stress. I knew my problems weren’t ever that bad, but they still affected me. The more you feel about your issues, the harder you can push on the intervals and get the pain out in a way that will actually be beneficial for you. So even if your problems are only big to you, they still do matter. We all have these issues and maybe we all need to be more open to this fact that we are all fighting our stresses and they feel just as big as ever.  It is up to you to find a way to manage these stressors and to keep a smile on that face.

If you have any good ways to fight your stresses, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Update - An older me

Hey guys,

Just turned 23, so I have officially jumped ship into the tougher/deeper field of elite riders. Hopefully with my new age will come new found wisdom for this coming season. I will try to update every week if possible, some might be shorter than others, and some might just be me saying something for tips such as my last post.

For my training I have been doing more volume on the bike and cut back my running to just once a week at about 45min-1hr. I have started doing one long ride a week in the spin room (3-4hrs) and those are proving to be pretty tough. Especially since you combat dehydration more so I find indoors because it gets so much warmer and you don't have the wind to cool you down. Add in to that one day of some lower end z4 to try and get some power back in my legs. Things are hopefully shaping up to see me be my fittest for this coming season!

The other big part that I need lots of work on this year is my mind game. Definitely highly overlooked when people outside the sport look at it. So much strategy and gambling is required if you want to see results. I find I might have been a little to cautious and not wanting to make anyone mad/upset with me. While I am here, I do want to quickly draw the line that I am talking about going for breaks, staying near the front of the pack and suffering when I need to and talking about not cutting people off or pushing people out of the spot I want in the peloton. There is no need for stupid crashes and I don't want to be part of them. Ok, back to where I was, I think knowing I have a better engine to back me will help give me the confidence to go for it, rather than sit in and hope things will all come back together nicely like in cat4.

I have already signed up for Paris to Ancaster, and Steaming Nostril. Both races are a blast, and a great way to test your early season fitness without having to worry so much about results. If you can, try to make it out to them yourself!

Anyway I have a pile of reading to do, so I will leave you here. Hope your fitness goals are coming along as well as mine. I will leave you with a motivational quote from a quick google search:

"Stop wishing. Start doing."

As the title says, finally I was able to crack the top 10 in an E1/2 Ontario Cup. For some reason this race wasn't very well attended. I...
